Wireless M-Bus Gateway (Solar)
The Lobaro Solar Gateway for Smart Metering enables regular wireless remote reading of consumption meters such as water meters and heat cost allocators using wireless M-Bus (868 MHz, C1/T1, S1 modes) and Sensus RF as well as downstream transmission via NB-IoT, LTE-M mobile radio or LoRaWAN to the Internet. Power is supplied exclusively from the internal solar cell.
The Lobaro innovation is suitable for indoor and outdoor installation and enables consumption information (UVI) during the year for tenants and smart city applications. In addition, the very frequent data transmission of meter values enables predictive maintenance applications.
Description
The Lobaro Solar Wireless M-Bus Gateways records consumption values from up to 500 commercially available water meters, heat meters, heat cost allocators or similar devices with a radio-readable interface. It uses an 868 MHz wireless M-Bus radio interface or Sensus RF Bubble Up and forwards the data regularly and encrypted via NB-IoT, LTE mobile radio or LoRaWAN to the Internet for regular evaluation.

The gateway has an integrated solar cell that permanently supplies the device with energy as long as there is daylight. Thanks to the long-life supercapacitor, readout intervals can be many times longer than with battery-powered devices if installed in a suitable location. In addition, there are no costs for battery replacement. In many applications, consumption data can even be transmitted hourly and in other cases at least daily. This is not possible with conventional battery-powered gateways, as these often only offer limited transmission options and cannot guarantee regular data transmission due to the limited battery life.
The wireless M-Bus telegrams are transmitted in encrypted form to the Lobaro IoT platform. There they can be viewed and downloaded as a CSV file. The gateway uses modern NB-IoT or LTE mobile radio technologies that are specially optimised for sensor data and enable remote reading in places where smartphones have no reception. The SIM card installed as standard has a data volume of 3 MB per month over a 10-year period and the firmware allows switching to the alternative upload via LoRaWAN.

Configuration
The device is configured “over the air” using the Lobaro platform. When using LoRaWAN, a simple downlink is sufficient to adjust the system parameters. For example, whitelists for meters or the readout intervals can be set.
Lobaro IoT platform
To evaluate the product, you can use the free test instance* of the Lobaro IoT platform available on our server. For production systems, please contact us about installing the platform on your server or AWS or connecting the hardware directly. No platform is absolutely necessary for LoRaWAN.
